The last two decades have seen a sustained and considerable growth of interest and critical work on the rise of the space industry and economy from the perspective of scholars and artists working across the humanities and the social sciences. This growing body of critical work is often referred to as the social study of outer space, critical outer space studies, and, more recently but also more widely accepted, the space humanities. A highly intersectional and collaborative interdisciplinary field, the space humanities however remain anchored in the criticalities afforded by its Euroamerican genealogies, and often in reaction to and relation with the centres of space technology and science in those continents. How might the space humanities figure and what might they do in the contexts of Southeast Asia, its regional diversities, and its position with regards to China and its own pursuit of extraterrestrial power and hegemony? This presentation will outline some parameters to start thinking about this question, locating the arts and culture as domains of practice where Southeast Asian perspectives may be articulated with a degree of criticality that accounts for the regional position in the planetary context of extraterrestrial industrialism.
